It took me a while to 'get' LA, but on my fourth visit, it finally worked its magic on me. I was based in West Hollywood, compact, walkable, and diverse with a fantastically sordid history. As well as being a beautiful city, West Hollywood's central location makes it a great base from which to explore LA's many other areas.
